DCBQ Logo
The logo came from a discussion among the founding members of the quintet after playing a holiday concert. Although no one was sure that the group might be successful, we decided to start the group and see where it would go.
First, we adopted the name, District of Columbia Brass Quintet, since we all worked in the District of Columbia and commonly played music at the MedStar National Rehabilitation Hospital. Since three of the original musicians were physicians at the hospital, we were relatively confident that no one would be particularly unkind to us. To be sure, we added a nurse from the hospital as the tuba player to further protect our status as a musical group.
We then needed 'branding', so the logo development was the next logical step. Since many people do not know the instrumentation of a brass quintet, that seemed to be a good idea to include. From our perspective as musicians, we had decided to 'jump into the water' - hence the water and horizon background. If one uses some imagination, the instruments look like a person leaping into the water. The water needed to be deep enough so that everything is safe, since we are rehabilitation physicians and keenly aware of shallow water accidents. It is not cliff diving, this represents 'jumping into adequate water both feet first'.
This is how the idea was born and perpetuates itself with the group's love of music, sharing our best efforts to produce good music and the camaraderie of producing that music together.
